Bellangala Mountain
Bellangala Reserve is located about 27 km along the Balangoda–Kalawana road from Balangoda town, in a semi-arid forest region under moderately warm climatic conditions. The forest reserve extends from there to the Kalawana junction. Rich in numerous rare medicinal plants, this part of the forest has historically been known as the “Bellangala Herbal Garden.” Among its flora are Hodal, Attikka, Puswel, Kumburuwel, Bimpol, Gammalu, Aralu, Bulu, Nelli, Bim Kohomba, Pranjiva, Kathurupila, Babila, Kothalhimbatu, Rasakida, Katakella, Ankenda, Hathawariya, Waldahi, Yakinara, and Valkanbili, alongside many valuable and endemic plant species of Sri Lanka. About 1 km along the Balangoda–Kalawana road through the reserve, on the left side near the hilltop, there is a small natural stream spring with clear cool water, which flows even during dry periods. Though the path is somewhat narrow, walking about 3 km through this natural medicinal forest allows visitors to see various small mammals, birds, and butterfly species. Additionally, from the hill slopes, one can enjoy views of small streams, irrigation channels from nearby villages such as Diyawinna and Welipathaya, and the scenic hills stretching into the distance.
